How Germaphobes are Killing Us All

Used properly, antibiotics are great, but with drug resistance in bacteria increasing with every use, and side effects galore–they aren’t a sustainable choice!

Antibiotics are Great
Before antibiotics:
1/9 people died of skin infection.
3/10 people with pneumonia died from it.
5/1000 women who gave birth died.
Ear infections caused deafness.
sore throats led to heart failure.

Antibiotics enable:
Cancer treatment.
Organ transplants.
Every major open-cavity surgery.
Every surgery on a part of the body that already has bacteria.
Every implantation of a device.
Cosmetic plastic surgery.

As well as most of the cheap modern food we enjoy.
(To compensate for sickening animals and changed raising practices, meat, fish, and seafood would go up in price dramatically)

But antibiotics can be horribly misused as well.

2.) Antibiotics kill good and bad bacteria
3.) Drug resistant bacteria remains with less competition for resources
4.) Drug resistant bacteria gives drug resistance to other bacteria

The whole ecosystem becomes resistant:

Antibiotics used to raise animals cause –>
Drug resistant bacteria in meat not cooked or handled properly –> humans
Or,
–> Fertilizer or water containing animal feces with drug resistant bacteria is used on crops
–> Then, crops contaminated with drug resistant feces are eaten by humans.

Antibiotics create resistant bacteria in human gut.
–> Humans head to hospital–> creating dangerous anti-resistant zones
–> or, they stay in the community…spreading anti-resistant bacteria.

Either way, we’re bound to get hit.
