March 2017

What is a bachelor’s degree in health sciences, and why earn one? In short, a BHS is a general degree for undergraduates who are interested in healthcare but are undecided on their career path. Because of this, it’s common for schools to define their programs through distinctive tracks. A program may offer tracks for future healthcare practitioners (physical and occupational therapy, physician assisting, radiologic technology, etc.), professionals (non-clinical fields like health administration, public health, health education, environmental safety, etc.), or both.

But regardless of the specifics, the rapid growth of the healthcare industry makes earning a bachelor’s in health science a practically fool-proof move. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that jobs for physical and occupational therapists will increase by 40% over the next decade!

Methodology for Ranking the 30 Best Bachelor’s in Health Science Programs

There are a whole bunch of colleges and universities that offer health science majors, so our very first step in compiling our list was to cut down the list of contenders. We set the following requirements:

  • The school must be public or private non-profit (no for-profit institutions)
  • Offer a full, four-year BHS degree (no degree completion)
  • Be actively conferring health science degrees (at least 10 awarded in 2014-15)
  • Maintain an annual net price of no more than $20k

We then ranked all the eligible programs on four factors:

Number of Tracks
Programs were awarded points for the number of tracks/concentration options they offer. This includes codified concentrations as well as suggested course maps and/or groups of suggested electives for different disciplines.

Breadth of Options
Programs earned one point for providing specialized tracks in either pre-practitioner OR pre-professional areas, or two points for offering both.

Popularity of Program
In addition to the above threshold on the number of degrees conferred, we looked at overall popularity by awarding points based on the total number of BHS degrees the school awarded in 2014-15. The best health science programs are attracting the most students for a reason!

Cost of Attendance
We already set an upper limit on price, but we emphasis affordability even more by awarding points to programs based on their average net cost. Obviously, cheaper programs earned more points.

At the end, we calculated a 100-point scale and weighted all the categories so that each factor had equal impact on the program’s final ranking. Take a look at the 30 top health science programs below.
