Texas State University-San Marcos

College of Health Professions

Texas State University is one of the oldest colleges in Texas. Originally established in 1899, it spent its early years training students on the basics of teaching elementary and high school aged students in the field. It eventually changed from a teaching college to a full fledged public university. Sometimes called Texas State University-San Marcos because of its location, most refer to it by the acronym of TSU. U.S. News and World Report included TSU on its list of the best colleges in the west, and Forbes ranked it among all colleges in the country. Washington Monthly also highlighted the graduate school at the university.

Masters of Healthcare Administration

The Master of Healthcare Administration program at TSU is one of the best accredited healthcare management degree programs in San Antonio and in the state. This program is open to students who complete the bachelor’s program at TSU and those who have a degree from another school. Students can enroll part time as they work in the field or enter on a full time basis. It consists of 43 credits of core healthcare classes, though students who have previous experience may find that they need to take fewer classes. TSU also gives students the option of writing a thesis or doing fieldwork. The thesis is worth six credits, but students can earn up to eight credits for doing fieldwork. This extra work gives students more practical experience and ensures that they better understand the duties they will need to perform on the job after leaving the grad school.

University of the Incarnate Word

School of Graduate Studies and Research

The University of the Incarnate World is a medium sized private university in the Alamo Heights neighborhood of San Antonio. Founded in 1881, the university acted as a college for women that a group of Sisters formed after arriving in the city to assist with the cholera epidemic of the time. While the university now admits males, it still has a deep connection to the Catholic Church. It also operates two local high schools that prepare students for college. The university is unique because it has a volunteer commitment that requires all students do some volunteer work before graduating. Its population recently rose to nearly 10,000 students.

Master of Health Administration

When designing its Master of Health Administration, UIW wanted to create a program that students could complete faster than they could at other schools. It’s a 45 credit program designed for full time students to finish in just 21 months. More than 80% of students who graduated after 2013 now work in the healthcare industry, and it has a completion rate of more than 90% among all its classes. The university breaks this program into simple eight week classes, and most students take two courses during each of those sessions. It ranks as one of the top accredited healthcare management degree programs in San Antonio because it requires that students take a capstone course. This lets them use the skills they developed in the program to do independent research and either create a project or write a paper that uses some of their skills.
