Oklahoma State University

Graduate College

Oklahoma State University is a land-grant public research institution based in Stillwater. Founded in 1890, the school offers more than 200 majors through its six colleges. About 35,000 students from every state and nearly 120 countries are enrolled at the university’s five branch campuses across the state. The first graduate classes were offered at Oklahoma State in 1911. Today the Graduate School offers 17 master’s degree programs and 45 doctorate programs. More than 4000 graduate students are enrolled at the university, which has garnered a variety of national rankings over the years. In 2013, Oklahoma State placed 23rd on Forbes Magazine’s list of “best value colleges.”

Master of Science in Health Care Administration

Oklahoma State’s master’s in health care administration is a 32-hour program that teaches students about valuable management concepts needed for those who provide leadership in the world of health care. Graduate students may choose to concentrate either on administration or on health care leadership and entrepreneurship. Both the Stillwater and Tulsa campuses offer classes on campus, but students also may choose to complete their courses entirely online.

As part of the degree program, master’s students must either complete a thesis or a creative component, and everyone takes a slate of core management courses. Master’s candidates who choose to focus on administration also may take courses such as introduction to global health, health care accounting and auditing, health care compliance, and leadership methods. Those who focus on leadership and entrepreneurship will study topics such as organizational leadership, leadership methods and styles, and human resources in health care and public administration.

Southern Nazarene University

School of Graduate Studies

Located in Bethany, Oklahoma, Southern Nazarene University is a liberal arts institution offering more than 70 majors and minors. About 2100 students are enrolled at the university, which is affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene. The university prides itself on maintaining a Christian atmosphere in keeping with the school’s motto, “Character, Culture, Christ.”

Southern Nazarene’s graduate school offers programs in six areas: counseling, business, education, kinesiology, nursing, and theology. In addition to the main Bethany campus, the university offers some programs at satellites in Tulsa and Del City. The school strives to maintain its affordability, and has been ranked among the 50 most affordable Christian universities in the country by Christian Universities Online.

Master of Business Administration – Health Care

Graduate students can pursue a master’s degree in business administration through online coursework or in a traditional campus setting in Bethany, Del City, or Tulsa. The 40-hour program is offered one night a week. The program’s goal is to improve the managerial effectiveness of baccalaureate-trained health care professionals and to provide them with necessary skills for success in the business.

Graduates of the MBA program should be competent communicators who can deliver business presentations, effective leaders who can accomplish goals on a team, and strong critical thinkers with an ethical foundation. A knowledge of current business trends, human resource practices, financial statement analysis, and leadership skills also are among the expected learning outcomes for the program. Students can anticipate taking classes in organizational communication, legal environment of health care, marketing management, human resources management and administration, managerial economics, ethics in health care, and financial management.

The University of Oklahoma

The Graduate College and the College of Liberal Studies

The University of Oklahoma is a public research institution offering more than 150 undergraduate programs, 160 master’s degrees, and 75 doctorate programs. Based in Norman, the university has an enrollment of more than 30,000 students. The school is known for quality academics, competitive athletics, and a high level of research activity.

The university offers master’s degrees through the Graduate School and through the College of Liberal Studies. Founded in 1909, the graduate school enrolls about 4000 students seeking advanced degrees. The College of Liberal Studies was established more than 50 years ago to meet the needs of adult and non-traditional students who wanted to pursue a graduate degree while balancing other obligations.

Master of Arts in Human and Health Services Administration

This 33-hour master’s degree program is offered through the College of Liberal Studies. Offered entirely online, the program gives students the flexibility to pursue an advanced degree while continuing to work and take care of family obligations. The program is designed to give students a broad look at the health care system with the goal of enhancing professional advancement in the industry.

To qualify for the program, students must have previous work history or training in the field. Class topics include subjects such as strategic planning and evaluation, ethics, woman and leadership, cultures of organizations, and the psychological aspects of disabilities. All enrolled students have an advisor who helps to craft an individualized degree program to suit their needs.

Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Health Dual Degree

Graduate students also may prepare for a career in health administration by earning a dual degree both in business administration and in public health through the Graduate School. With Oklahoma’s dual degree programs, students can take courses in two fields of study at the same time. Students must meet the admissions requirements for both degree programs and they must be admitted before completing 12 credit hours in either of the two programs. Oklahoma’s College of Public Health is one of 44 accredited schools of public health in the nation. Public health students complete coursework that focuses on public health issues on the local, national, and global level. Classes may address topics such as epidemiology, health administration and policy, environmental health, and health promotion science. To complete the business portion of the program, students will take courses designed to help them with the administrative role in health care. These may include managerial economics, financial accounting, organizational behavior, corporate finance, and marketing management.
