In 1892, Professor George Colcord and his wife, Ada, started Graysville Academy in Graysville, Tennessee. Twenty-three students enrolled that first year. The University of Memphis

School of Public Health

Originally known as the West Tennessee State Normal School, the University of Memphis was established in 1909 with the support of the Tennessee Legislature. The first classes chose blue and gray as school colors—interestingly the same as the Union and Confederate Civil War armies.
