Health informatics is becoming an increasingly important field. The merging point between healthcare and data science, HI assists a great number of industries and fields – from government to hospitals – to properly provide patients with essential healthcare and determine where necessary investitures must be made to maintain and improve healthcare structures and programming.

But transitioning between academic study and work in the field of HI requires at least some level of experience with putting the student’s academic knowledge to practical use – so here are five great internships for master’s in HI students.

1. mHealth (Digital Health) Analytics Intern/Co-Op

This intern position in Seattle, Washington at Sage Bionetworks requires interns to actively integrate technology on the go throughout the day – utilizing tools from mobile sensors to smartphone apps. Interns will help to analyze live streaming data and integrate that data into Sage’s cloud resources, apply machine learning methodology to diagnostics for diseases, and help conceptualize and build new tools for data collection and integration. Candidates are expected to have programming skills as well.

2. Public Health Intern

This position at Leidos in Atlanta, Georgia merges the fields of biostatistics, HI and epidemiology with public health administration, and is an excellent position for HI students interested in public health to apply for. Participating interns will work with Leidos on a project in public health in conjunction with the Center for Disease Control, and will be actively mentored by public health professionals at the company. This eight to twelve week program offers a monthly stipend determined on the basis of the successful candidate’s experience and education level.

3. Clinical Informatics Intern, Summer 2018

Taking place at Regeneron in Tarrytown, New York, two intern positions are open for summer 2018. The first involves building a a test environment that provides better logging results for querying users for the system; the second focuses on machine learning for the purposes of genetic study. Both internships may lead to longer-term positions within the company, and both bachelor’s and graduate students are encouraged to apply. Interns will present their work to the other company staff at the conclusion of the internship.

4. Summer Intern – HI

Saint Alphonsus Health System in Boise, Idaho is seeking a summer intern whose focus lies in HI. This full-time, ten-week, paid position involves a range of professional activities from customer service to software improvement and integration. Successful interns are required to have excellent critical thinking skills, ability to work with minimal supervision, proficiency with MS Office and excellent organizational skills.

5. Intern – Healthcare Informatics

Offered by BJC HealthCare in St. Louis, Missouri, this position – potentially leading to a longer-term career at BJC – involves providing departmental support, assisting on projects and programs that are HI-focused, and working with both patients and staff to ensure the best quality care.
