There are a number of great organizations out there for professionals in healthcare administration and management. While it is not typically a requirement of a position for people to join one of these organizations, doing so can bring a manager numerous benefits. From networking to conferences to educational resources, members get to make connections and learn about ideas on the cutting edge of healthcare. People who take on a leading role in these organizations may also play a part in legislative agendas. While there is a long list of potential organizations one could join, below is a list of a few of the ones available to healthcare administrators and managers in the United States.
American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management
The AAHAM provides resources to administrators in healthcare, including information, education, and advocacy in areas such as data management, medical records, and patient relations. It was founded in 1968, and today its membership is comprised of employees in a wide range of healthcare fields. The organization focuses on professional development by putting on conferences and seminars, releasing publications, offering professional certifications, and organizing networking events. A portion of the organization's activities also focuses on monitoring various legislative regulations that relate to healthcare. People who are members become eligible for certain certifications, get invited to special events, and can benefit from their scholarship and awards program.
Healthcare Administrators Association
The HCAA was formed in 1980 and initially served as an advisory group for administrators and service providers by helping with legislative and regulatory decisions. Recent changes in healthcare law have prompted the group to take a more active role in legislation and advocating for healthcare administrators' interests. They communicate with the media, take on educational opportunities, and influence policymakers. Their members include insurance carriers, human resources managers, consultants, audit firms, and more. Members get free access to special publications, are updated on important legislative actions, and are invited to networking events and seminars.
Association for Healthcare Administrative Professionals
The AHCAP is an organization that helps administrative professionals find avenues to support leaders in the industry. Their mission includes advancing professional development, leadership, value, and excellence among healthcare administrators. Their methods include education, advocacy, and communication, to name a few. Members get access to sponsorship opportunities, discounts, conferences, and certifications.
American College of Healthcare Executives
The ACHE is an international organization of which more than 40,000 healthcare executives are members. They offer a board certification in healthcare management and have over 80 chapters that offer members networking opportunities at the local level. It puts out a magazine called Healthcare Executive and has its hand in career development and public policy programs as well. The organization helps conduct research and educational initiatives in the field and is known for its annual Congress on Healthcare Leadership. They are also responsible for publishing a variety of textbooks that are used on college campuses around the country. Members can connect with other healthcare executives, get access to educational resources, and take on leadership opportunities in their community.
