Argosy University Online Master of Public Health
The MPH program at Argosy provides a generalist education in public health with topics ranging from healthcare policy to management and information technology to communications. The degree is offered entirely online which makes it a convenient option for working professionals. All students must complete 45 total hours of coursework including 39 traditional didactic courses. These include History and Foundations of Public Health, Epidemiology and Risk Management, Accounting and Finance for Managers, and Social, Cultural, and Behavioral Implications on Health. Faculty emphasize looking at all public health topics from both macro and micro perspectives, examining how things affect both the individual and the system as a whole.
Before graduation, all students also get some practical, hands-on experience in the industry through the field experience requirement. This consists of two classes, each 1.5 credit hours in length, during which students have the opportunity to put everything they learned in the classroom into practice. Entitled, Leadership in Public Health I and II, each experience is 5 weeks long, and students take one immediately following the other, usually during the summer. Faculty members work individually with each student to find an appropriate local placement, and sometimes this leads to a job offer upon graduation. Other students find an internship within their current place of employment. The final requirement for graduation is the completion of the 3-hour capstone course, Writing a Public Health Grant. Students learn how to write effective grants and actually go through the entire process on their own for a project of their choosing. Since funding is such an important part of the public health field, this experience is extremely relevant and can be brought up during job interviews.

Argosy University Accreditation Details
Even though the university has campuses throughout the country and online, its headquarters is located in Orange, California, which means that it is in the region overseen by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) for accreditation. The WSCUC evaluates schools in California and Hawaii as well as other territories in and along the Pacific Ocean. Argosy University was last accredited in 2008 and is scheduled for its next review in 2018. This process certifies that the education provided by the university meets all quality standards and adequately prepares students for professional careers and further academic study. The commission also evaluates how the school is run from a business standpoint to ensure that appropriate administrative policies are established and that the financial aspects of the organization are managed sensibly and transparently. Accreditation is also important because it enables students to receive federal financial aid to help offset tuition costs and streamlines the process of transferring credits between universities.
Argosy University Application Requirements
Argosy works hard to keep the admissions process simple for applicants. Students only need to submit a completed application, undergraduate transcripts, and personal statement. For the master's degree in public health, a bachelor's degree is required, but no specific major or previous coursework is necessary. Admission is primarily based on GPA and space in the program. Students can earn entry into the program with a GPA of at least 2.7 from their entire undergraduate degree or above 3.0 from their most recent 60 hours of college-level classes. Applicants who do not meet these requirements but who have at least a 2.0 GPA can be admitted on some occasions. These students must also submit an extended personal statement and a professional resume. Plus, if the GPA is less than 2.4, three letters of recommendation are also necessary for consideration. All admitted students with GPAs lower than 2.7 need to successfully complete the course, Academic Writing, during their first two semesters. These specific policies are in place because Argosy University seeks to educate as many students as possible while ensuring all those admitted have the best chance for success.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition at Argosy University depends on the campus location and specific degree program. For the Master's in Public Health online format, tuition runs $618 per credit hour which equals approximately $27,000 for the entire 45-hour program. All students are encouraged to complete a FAFSA which determines their eligibility for certain federal aid programs. Scholarships like the Alumni Scholarship for Argosy graduates, the Diversity Excellence Scholarship, and the Returning Adult Scholarship are offered by the university for students who meet certain need and merit requirements. Additionally, the Education Foundation Scholarship Fund provides a variety of general and degree-specific grants and scholarships to students enrolled at its partner schools including Argosy University.
Students who are continuing employment while working on their degrees are advised to check with their employers. Many companies offer tuition reimbursement, especially if the course of study is relevant to their industry. Staff also work closely with past and current military members to help secure all related tuition credits. After determining how much they will receive from all types of aid, many MPH students use Federal Graduate PLUS loans for the remainder of their tuition. Argosy does allow students to set up payment plans to pay as they go instead of requiring the total upfront.
