The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree at Creighton University is available fully online. It is designed to give students the skills and knowledge they need to transform the well-being and health of the community as well as promote positive change. Students who pursue this graduate degree at Creighton receive a public health education built on a foundation of Jesuit values that make up the school’s mission, including fighting for marginalized and poor populations’ best interests, and caring for the entire person. The program is for students who aim to serve others by advocating for disease control and prevention, removing socioeconomic barriers to a healthy family, solving population health issues, and advocating for health education.

The MPH degree is a flexible program in which students may complete coursework online without the requirement of on-campus residencies. Students taking one course per eight-week term can expect to earn their degree in two-and-a-half years. Students have the option to customize their master’s degree by pursuing a concentration in areas such as health policy and ethics or healthcare management. In addition, courses taken during the health policy and ethics concentration may count toward a graduate certificate in healthcare ethics, and courses for the healthcare management concentration may be applied toward Creighton’s graduate certificate in healthcare management. In other words, depending on the courses chosen, students may earn a graduate certificate without taking any additional courses outside the MPH program.

The 44-credit-hour MPH degree consists of 22 credit hours in areas such as public health ethics, biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, social and behavioral aspects of public health, writing for graduate students, and the organization and management of public health services. Students must then complete 15 credits of concentration courses, the specific topics of which will depend on the concentration chosen. Possible areas of interest include research ethics, health policy and ethics, law and healthcare ethics, public health leadership, health planning and marketing, healthcare economics and finance, health communication and informatics, and managing healthcare organizations.

Students round out the last seven credits of their degree through a practice experience and capstone. With help from a practicum coordinator, students will determine the focus of their practice experience based on their interests and goals. Then, they will work with a professional public health expert in their area to complete the practicum. At the end of the program, students will use their experience to complete their capstone projects. The goal is to help students develop the ability to publicly communicate and synthesize findings from critical self-reflection, practical experience, and research on a selected public health concern topic.

Students who earn an online MPH degree from Creighton University will be able to evaluate, implement, and plan programs that address specific public health needs, identify various health problems as well as the needs of defined populations, and demonstrate the competency necessary to carry out broad public health functions in international, national, state, and local settings. Graduates may seek employment as community and social service specialists, community health workers, health educators, and medical and health services managers.
