George Washington University

George Washington University is also featured in our ranking The Top 15 Best Master’s in Health Administration Online Programs (MHA).

George Washington University is one of the largest college campuses in the Washington DC area. Established in 1821 as Columbian College, it also served as Columbian University before becoming GWU. The university renamed itself in honor of President George Washington who once lobbied for a formal university in the district. GWU’s oldest department is the College of Arts and Sciences, which opened in 1821. It is also home to 13 other colleges and schools, including a College of Arts and Design, School of Business and School of Nursing, which opened in 2010.

GWU is a selective university that accepts less than half of the applications submitted each year. In 2011 through 2013, the university accepted fewer than 40% of the students who applied. Despite being very selective, the university has an enrollment of more than 27,000 students. This figure includes more than 15,000 graduate and doctoral students, many of whom take classes online or enroll in full online degree programs. Both ARWU and U.S. News & World Report rank GWU as one of the top colleges in the United States and around the world. The Princeton Review also ranked George Washington University on its lists of schools with the best dorms and the best study abroad programs.

Master’s in Health Administration Online

GWU designed a Master’s in Health Administration (MHA) degree for busy students that allows them to take all required classes and complete all other work required through its online campus. Many of the courses in this program feature videos that students can watch, which helps them feel like they’re really in the classroom. These videos are available at all hours of the day and night to fit the schedules of all students. Students can connect with their peers and professors through virtual discussion boards too.

Students enrolled in the MHA program take part in a cohort. The same students who start the program together take the same classes and work together until they graduate. GWU allows students to start classes in the beginning of January or in April. Those who enroll later in the year can start in July or October. All the classes in this program last for 10 weeks and encourage students to share the practical knowledge that they gained from working in the field with their peers. Students will take eight terms of classes, and the university groups similar classes together to help students build off the knowledge they gain in each one.

This GWU program is unique because it includes some immersion requirements. Students will complete two immersions that require 40 hours of their time and two immersions that require 20 hours of work. The university offers immersions on its main campus and in major healthcare facilities. Each one functions as a fieldwork component. Not only will students have the chance to gain some hands on and practical experience, but they will gain that experience as they work with other students in their cohort group. Students will take courses that teach them about healthcare improvements, quality management, public health and healthcare management.

George Washington University Accreditation Details

As GWU has regional accreditation, students will find that they can easily transfer any credits they earned on another campus. The regional accreditation that it has from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) also allows students to transfer the credits they earned from GWU to another campus and to use federal and state funding to pay for their education. Other accreditation that George Washington has comes from organizations such as the American Psychological Association (APA), American Bar Association (ABA), Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management (CAHM) and Commission on Education for Public Health (CEPH).

George Washington University Application Requirements

GWU encourages prospective students to watch some of the videos it shares online before they apply. The videos allow students to see some of what they will need to do in the online classes that they take. They can also learn more about the technology requirements in place for online students to ensure that they can keep up with the demands of the university.

The MHA program has both a priority deadline and a regular decision deadline for applications. Students will need to submit their applications up to four months before the program starts to meet the priority deadline. All other students can submit their applications up to two months before the next term starts. Students will also need to submit the GWU online application and pay a nonrefundable $75 application fee.

George Washington asks prospective MHA students to submit two letters of recommendation that are no more than one year old. The letters should come from either professors who worked with the student in college or supervisors who worked with the student in the field. They must write and submit a statement of purpose that explains why they want to earn an MHA degree and what they will do with that degree. The university also asks for a resume and an official transcript that shows the student took all prerequisite courses. Those applying to the MHA program will also need to go through a short interview.

Tuition and Financial Aid

GWU charges a tuition rate of $1,655 per credit hour. As the MHA program requires that students complete 50 credits, those students pay more than $80,000 to earn their degrees. The university does not charge any fees, which allows students to easily look at the total costs of finishing a degree. Its Milken Institute School of Public Health provides scholarships for online graduate students to help bring down their overall costs. Students can qualify for merit scholarships based on their cumulative grade point averages in college, but the university also offers need scholarships for students who demonstrate a higher need for financial aid. GWU will provide students with the information necessary to apply for financial aid and with a letter that shows any scholarship funds they will receive.

The university also offers support for students who need more help. After filing the FAFSA, the university will talk with students about their loan options. Many graduate students take out unsubsidized loans each year that they enroll in a graduate program. PLUS loans are available for those who need more help. George Washington University offers resources for students interested in alternative and private student loans too.
