Tomorrow's World of Health Today

At Kent State University, students may study partially online to earn a Master of Public Health. Students may select from five possible foci. They are:

•Environmental Health Sciences

•Health and Policy Management

•Social and Behavioral Sciences

Biostatics involves the gathering, collating, and analyzing of health and patient data. Students learn to apply statistical methods and empirical research techniques to health-related problems and their accompanying solutions. Environmental health sciences examine how the world and what's in it affect people's health in various ways. Epidemiology is the study of disease and disease-causing agents. Health and policy management teaches students how to develop "better mousetraps" when it comes to delivering health services. Social and behavioral sciences is a research track similar to environmental health sciences but focusing on personal interactions rather than those between people and the environment.

Students who enroll in the Master of Public Health program take classes online and on campus. It is a hybrid program.

About Kent State University

Kent State University is much more than the tragic events of May 4, 1970. The university has always been a bastion of education since its inception in 1910 as a normal school. Ohio was one of the last states to authorize state funds for the training of teachers to fill its shortfalls. The university's beginning was not without strife, either, as entrenched schools in the southern parts of the state treated Kent State University and its northwestern counterpart as rivals to be downtrodden. In the 1930s, Kent State University hummed quietly along as the Depression swirled about the campus.

Over the next 25 years, the university attracted many young and innovative faculty members. The school gradually rejected the anachronistic rules about women signing in and out of their dorms with permission from male advisers and even rejected a college football bowl bid in Florida because they would have had to have left their black teammates behind.

In 1994, the school earned the designation of a tier-II research university from the Carnegie Foundation. Just about 10 years later, Kent State University expanded both its program offerings and physical presence. New residence halls and educational buildings graced the campus, and new curricula allowed the university to continue to innovate into the 21st century.

Students must also submit a goal statement and pass the Graduate Record Exam, the Graduate Management Admission Test, or a similar test of knowledge and ability. International students must also provide proof of English proficiency if their native languages are not English.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Graduate tuition at Kent State University for Ohio residents is $11,536. For out-of-state students, the tuition is $21,524. If for some reason, a graduate student wants to live on campus, the rate for room and board is $11,362. Any credits about 18 per semester are charged at the rate of $525 per credit hour. Additionally, a graduate student's thesis counts as a class, and the fee for that class is $142.55 per credit hour, plus a general fee of $24.45. The thesis for the Master of Public Administration counts as six credit hours, so the final cost for the thesis is $879.75. International tuition is $18,714.

Students who need financial aid of some sort must begin with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. This form outlines all of a student's income and assets and also includes parental tax forms and income information. Most scholarships offered by Kent State University itself are for undergraduates, but there are some for graduate students listed on the website. Students may also seek grants and other scholarships from outside Kent State University. They simply must inform the university of any they receive. Graduate students may also teach while on campus as graduate assistants. Such assistantships must not interfere with the student's academics. The same holds true for any work study programs in which a student participates.

Many scholarships and grants require students to maintain certain academic standards. Failure to meet those standards may result in the cancellation of such awards. If they're not canceled, they might be converted to unsubsidized federal Stafford loans at unfavorable interest rates.

Students have the option to secure loans in addition to or in lieu of scholarships and grants. The government pays the interest on subsidized loans while the student maintains full-time enrollment. When it comes to unsubsidized loans, the student not only pays interest on the principal but also interest on the accrued interest. Unsubsidized loans are easier to receive than other forms of financial aid, but they are among the most costly. Students who have questions about any financial matters should contact the Bursar's Office, the Office of Financial Aid, or both before either registering or enrolling.

Kent State University provides graduate students interested in public health with a terrific opportunity to ply their craft at a regionally accredited school.
