Master of Public Health (MPH)
National University offers opportunities for both online students and those who prefer more traditional programs. Its Master of Public Health (MPH) is a program available both online and off. Students also have the option of taking classes on any of its California campuses and fulfilling most of their requirements online. Designed for those who want to work in the public health field, this program looks closely at the issues and challenges facing students today. They learn how to find solutions to all of those common problems.
The program teaches students how to make decisions based on the data available and the best ways of looking at diseases and conditions that affect the general public. They also learn how to run healthcare organizations and the effect that social justice has on public health. National expects students to take at least 72 quarter units of courses. The classes that make up the public health core are worth 36 quarter units and include Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health Research Methods, Theories of Health Behavior and Public Health and the Environment. Students must also do a Public Health Capstone or a Public Health Internship too.
Students will take 36 quarter units of courses from within one specialization area too. They can choose from mental health, health promotion or healthcare administration. The university's mental health specialization teaches students how to work with victims and those struggling with complex issues. It includes courses such as Public Health Aspects of Drug Addiction, Public Health Program Evaluation, Public Health Aspects of Human Sexuality and Health Policy and Advocacy. Though students who choose other specializations may take some of the same classes, they'll also take courses based on that field of study, such as Health Organization Management and Healthcare Administration Human Resources Management. The MPH program offered by National University offers practical training for future healthcare professionals.
About National University
National University is a private university based out of California that has a strong presence online. Established in 1971, classes started the following year with an enrollment of just 27 students. Its founder chose the name National University because he wanted to provide opportunities for students all across the country. The university offered programs designed for working students and adults who wanted to work in one of the rapidly growing career fields in the country at the time. National slowly purchased new plots of land across the state and built new campuses before setting up its headquarters in La Jolla.
The Chronicle of Higher Education ranks National as one of the top employers in the education field. It also ranks has some of the best prep programs for teachers in the state. The university now awards both two- and four-year degree programs for undergrads and offers a few graduate and doctoral programs. Its professional programs prepare students for studying law and other subjects at the post-graduate level. National now has nearly 30 campuses in California and one Nevada campus. Students can also earn an MPH and other degrees online. With an enrollment of nearly 24,000 students, National University is one of the largest school systems in the west.
National University Accreditation Details
National University is one of the only schools with an online MPH program that has accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). The CEPH has its own requirements and guidelines for how a public health program should operate. Accreditation from this organization lets students know that the program will follow all those established guidelines. National also has regional accreditation from the organization responsible for accrediting degree programs in the west, which is the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission (WASCSCUC). This allows students to both transfer credits from and to any other university with regional accreditation and to apply for federal financial aid.
National University Application Requirements
The university offers a graduate admissions checklist that allows students to see exactly what they need to do when applying. Incoming students must have a bachelor's degree that they completed from a school with regional accreditation. The university looks for those who have a grade point average of at least 2.5 with a GPA of 2.75 or higher over the last two years or four semesters of classes taken. Those who have a lower GPA will also need to submit an official test score. National will accept scores from the MAT, GRE, and GMAT. The university will keep those students on probationary status until they take at least four units of classes and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
When applying to the university's graduate school, students will use the online application and select the MPH program from the list provided. The university encourages students to meet with a representative before applying to an online program. That representative can accept an unofficial transcript from the student and provide help with the application. Students will also need to sign a form that verifies they agree to follow the university's admissions and enrollment policies. Prospective students can fill out the National information request form to find out more about the MPH program.
Tuition and Financial Aid
National University charges separate rates for graduate courses based on the level of those classes. Any course taken at the 500 level will cost one rate per quarter unit and one amount per class. This rate varies between departments and programs. Grad students will also take classes at the 600 and 700 levels. Those courses cost $430 per quarter unit or $1,935 per class. Students also pay fees each semester and are responsible for their own living costs and expenses.
The university offers a financial aid guide online for students who want to apply for aid and those who want to know more about their options. Graduate students can apply for an unsubsidized loan, which will require that they complete the FAFSA. Though the government allows graduate students to borrow a total amount of $138,500, this amount will include the more than $65,000 they can borrow as undergrads. There is a Graduate PLUS loan program available also, which charges a set interest rate on those loans. Students may qualify for some grants and for other types of funding too. National University recommends that students secure their funding before they enroll in classes.
