Students who pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from Nova Southeastern University are prepared to hold positions within a variety of settings, including the corporate world, health policy and planning organizations, social service agencies, county and state health departments, healthcare facilities, community-based health education agencies, and universities and colleges. Individuals who earn their MPH degree may actively participate in the administration, evaluation, implementation, development, and planning of health-related services and programs.
The comprehensive online MPH degree is designed to prepare students to resolve, assess, and define public health issues. It emphasizes the acquisition of the skills and knowledge necessary to provide community service, conduct research, enhance clinical practice, develop and evaluate programs, prevent disease, and promote health. The curriculum is the same for both on-campus and online students and is typically taught by the same faculty member.
Students can expect to take three courses per year as well as two electives over the summer. Classes include topics such as social and behavioral sciences applied to health, epidemiology, legal and ethical issues in public health, environmental and occupational health, and biostatistics. Other areas of study include health policy and management as well as research methods in public health. Students may choose from a number of electives based on their specific interests and career goals such as health education, grant writing, hazard preparedness, communications, substance abuse, genomics, nutrition, and school, women's, and children's health. Those who are enrolled on a part-time basis have up to five years to finish the program.
Classes are available in both asynchronous and synchronous formats, the latter of which involves the entire class online at the same time for group work, discussions, presentations, and lectures. Students are given a weekly schedule, and attendance is counted as though the class was being held in-person. However, the online format allows students to complete their coursework on their own time while maintaining their community, family, and career obligations on a part- and full-time basis. All students must participate in an exit survey and onsite orientation when the program ends.
