The University of Scranton is a private university in Scranton, Pennsylvania that has an affiliation with the Roman Catholic Church. Prior to becoming a university, it operated as St. Thomas College, which the Jesuits opened in 1888. This small college offered high school classes for boys and had both a two-year program and a full college operating on its campus. The Society of Jesuits later established a separate prep academy for high school students, which moved to its own campus after splitting off from the college. It wasn’t until the end of the 1940s that the college became the University of Scranton. Its new name reflected the commitment that the university had to the education of students in the city.

Today, the university is home to three major colleges. One of those is a College of Arts and Sciences, but it also has a School of Management that offers business and management programs. Its College of Professional Studies helps prepare students for working in a number of different professional fields. The university now offers two doctoral programs, nearly 30 graduate programs and more than 30 programs for undergrads. With an enrollment of more than 5,000 students, it ranks as one of the largest schools in the Scranton area.

The University of Scranton has some strict application requirements in place for students applying to any of its graduate healthcare programs. Those students must provide the university with official transcripts that show they have grade point averages of at least 3.0. When they receive acceptance, students must present an official transcript before starting classes. This transcript must list the date that the student completed a bachelor’s degree. Their degrees must college from a university or college with regional accreditation too.

All prospective graduate students must use the online application that the university offers. They will answer questions on this application and provide documents that verify that information. The university also asks for three letters of reference. Students should pick references who are familiar with their professional work or the work that they did in school. Each reference must include contact information on their letters.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Students attending the University of Scranton won’t worry about tuition hikes and increases in the future because the university has a guaranteed tuition policy. This policy notes the rate that students pay when they first start and locks in that rate for the next few years. They can complete their degrees and pay the same amount in tuition each year.

The cost that students pay will vary based on how they can take their classes and what programs they study. Online classes can cost more or less than traditional classes do. Those enrolled in one of the health administration programs will pay $940 per credit hour to take classes online.

Both online and traditional graduate students can file the FAFSA. Many graduate students receive unsubsidized student loans from the federal government. They will go through both entrance and exit counseling before getting their loans and before they leave the university. Some students may qualify for the PLUS loans that the government allows parents to take out and different grants. They can also consider private and alternative student loans. These loans come from more traditional lenders. Those lenders base the interest rates on the loans on the student’s credit score. The University of Scranton will also accept outside scholarships that graduate students receive from different sources.
