Master of Health Administration at the University of Southern California
The University of Southern California’s Price School of Public Policy aims to enhance the practice and profession of health policy and management through the dissemination and conduct of scholarly research as well as the application of this research in the training and education of mid-career and new health professionals. The Master of Health Administration (MHA) degree actively engages students, allowing them to collaborate with the broader healthcare community with the goal of providing essential learning experiences, skills, and knowledge. Graduates have the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to solving the many healthcare challenges that face our society, and they are able to successfully help share the healthcare environment across all areas of the healthcare industry.
The MHA is built around a rigorous curriculum that includes both experiential and in-class learning. To earn the degree, students must complete 48 units that are split between elective and required courses. The program includes 40 units of core courses that cover topics such as legal issues in healthcare delivery, health information systems, financial management of health services, problems and issues in the health field, intersectoral leadership, and economics for policy, planning, and development. Other required topics of study include modeling and operations research, human behavior in public organizations, quality of care concepts, financial accounting and strategic management of healthcare organizations, and concepts and practices in managing healthcare organizations.
In addition to the 40 required units, students round out their degree with eight units in electives. Students will choose electives in two of the five specialization areas associated with the MHA degree, including quality of care, health information technology, health finance, health policy analysis, or management, operations, and leadership. After completing the degree, students will demonstrate competencies such as critical thinking and analysis, knowledge of the healthcare environment, policy and community advocacy, business and management knowledge, communication, and leadership skills.
In addition to the classroom curriculum, all MHA students participate in USC’s residency program, which allows them to put what they’ve learned into practice, ensuring that their skills are sufficient to attain a position upon graduation. Many graduates report that the residency program is one of the most beneficial components of the Price MHA experience. MHA students have two options for the residency program: a 500-hour Career Enhancement track or a Leadership Track Residency. The former is designed for students with professional health administration experience and emphasizes specialized activities and specific projects, while the latter is designed for students without professional experience and consists of 1,000 hours of work under a senior manager at an approved healthcare facility.
